Author Visits Classroom

Mary Joyce Lawhorn

On March 4, 2009, Mrs. Lyons's class was visited by a very unique published author, Mary Joyce Lawhorn. What made her so unique was the fact that she was born and raised right here in Monroe County, Kentucky. You can imagine how amazed we were when we discovered that she was a hometown girl.

While here, Ms. Lawhorn spoke to the class about poetry and her inspirations. She told us how poetry seemed to be the best therapy she had found for stress and worries of the world. Students were also given the opportunity to ask questions, and Ms. Lawhorn was eager to answer all of them. You could see her love for poetry and writing as she spoke throughout the day.

Ms. Lawhorn has published a total of six books. Four of her books are strictly poetry, her true love, and two are novels. Her books can be found at any major bookstore and also online. A link is provided below if you wish to purchase one of her books.

We are glad Ms. Lawhorn came. She was a wonderful and inspiring speaker. She provided us with insight into the world of writing we had never explored before. Her words right before she finished her presentation were perhaps the most inspiring of all, "Students, follow your dreams, because that will take you where you want to go." To us, it gave inspiration that even coming from a small rural town, you can still achieve anything. We would like to thank her for taking time out of her busy schedule to come and speak to us.
